The legend tells the story of Bluebird, animal that brings cheerfulness, happiness, prosperity and good health to whomever finds it and hear it singing. But you must never capture it and hold it for yourself or else it will eventually stop singing and die. Death of a Bluebird symbolizes the loss of innocence. A long time has passed since we heard the music of such bird here in our parts of the world, so we asked our friend porcupine to set us in the right direction and help us continue our journey in search of innocence to find the Bluebird. He told us of one, supposedly named Martin, who has been gone for quite some time now. This is it! Innocent Music has found him trapped and dying between branches of a fallen tree. We set him free and to thank us, he promised that we will soon be able to hear his music. It's going to be magical…

MARTIN BUTTRICH // DESOLAT, COCOON, GER
Martin Buttrich is famously as fluent behind a mixing console as in front of a virtual drum kit. That technical prowess, combined with a fascination for music of every shape, has resulted in outstanding releases on influential labels such as Planet E, Four:Twenty, Cocoon, Poker Flat, Nervous and Desolat. He’s also put his sonic thumbprint on many big ticket artists, notably receiving a Grammy nomination for a Tori Amos remix in 2003. Such diverse musical horizons are rare. While other prolific artists may have slowly watered down their music, Buttrich’s star has risen in diametric opposition. His vision has become more and more condensed, more and more crystallised. Flipping and puncturing grooves in a live setting is a snap for him, and he’s entranced audiences at festivals like Time Warp and Creamfields and at temples of boom such as Fabric (London), Womb (Tokyo), Cocoon (Frankfurt), Panorama Bar (Berlin) and Amnesia (Ibiza).

1. It has been a few years since your last visit to Slovenia. Tell us, what was the venue like, how did you like the Slovenian crowd?
As I remember it, it was a good night. Great sound system and my first time ever in Slovenia. I think I even changed my flight ... ; )
2. What was your favorite gig you played at lately, or maybe the best crowd, best club you played at?
Parties in Ibiza are always a highlight in the year, but I had a lot of special gigs this year – gigs in France, Holland and Spain for instance.
3. There are a lot of incredible artists on the scene right now, what are your favorites?
The guys we sign at Desolat. The newer artists, and the artist that are closer to the Desolat family like Tini, Guti, Hector and Livio & Roby.
4. A Dj has to have a wide knowledge of music and a lot of djs listen to all sorts of music. What are your favorite bands right now and can you name a few bands that are timeless for you?
The list would be too long. I have favorites for different moods, from Guns n' Roses, to Peter Gabriel to D'Angelo. Everything.
5. What is your view on different ways of playing music ( vinyl, cd,traktor...) and what do you think the trend will be in the future?
The trend is clearly leaning towards digital. In the end I don't care, as long as the entertainment is right! If people dance and have fun enjoying a good show, then it doesn't matter if the music comes from a guitar, CD player, vinyl or a computer.
6. What are your favorite record labels right now?
I don't have any.
7. Desolat is a label that you own with Loco Dice. Tell us a bit about the beginnings, was it hard to establish the label, and what kind of artists or tracks are interesting for Desolat?
The beginning wasn't that hard to be honest. We luckily had the right music and energy to try it out. It was never meant as a business, but always more as a fun project. With the right artists and good A&R work (which was mainly done by Dice) and the support of a lot of people – like our agents, and promoters – we were able to establish Desolat in a short period of time. And we never had a specific concept for the label. The only rule is that it's got to be fresh and exiting.
8. Being a famous dj & producer is probably the dream job, but it involves a lot of sacrificing and traveling, is there a moment when you think of doing something else, change of career?
YES, at least five times a year.
9. If you were tone deaf and you weren't a dj & producer, what would your career be?
I can't really imagine, but always thought that I would do something with pictures if I wasn’t working with sound.
10. Can you share with us the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you, not necessarily related to music?
No! ; )
